Create Songs From Empowering Dreams

Create Songs From Empowering Dreams
By Songwriter Sheryl Collins

I said the moment I started subscribing to others songwriters who share valuable information on how to write a song, I will share how I wrote songs before any prior training.  The one reason is that if songwriting seen like work than the fun is taken away of the whole craft. If someone had to journal who did not like to journal their day would find it as work.  Most of all work they hate. Since writing a hit song is like winning the lottery than songwriting should only be done by those who love it. I love writing songs and I love doing it every day. The one thing I learned through professionals is that an estimate of three songs out of a hundred you will write might get placed. So the possibilities of writing more than one hit song are like hitting the big pot lottery more than once or walking into a casino coming out a millionaire.

A few years ago, I purchase a dream journal. I use to try to keep my dreams written on the pc, but computer goes down. Most of all your valuable information can be lost or thrown to the world out there never know what happen to it. I learned through my journal that dreams inspired so much entertainment we see today. That includes the music we hear on the radio. Once you start journaling songs everytime a line come to you, believe me, it will come in your dreams. I only talk from experience.

Many artists who are legends wake to a perfect creation that we all sing from time to time.
Michael Jackson would wake up from his dreams to jot down words he hears on paper. Paul McCartney of Beatles wrote “Yesterday” in a dream. Sheryl! They are singers/ songwriters! Paul Webster who wrote “ Love Is A Many Splendored Thing”  was a songwriter. Richard Wagner dreamed an entire opera called “Tristan und Isolde.” What about a nightmare? Yes, Tartini wrote the Devil Trill from a nightmare that included the devil. He dreamed he pact the devil for the beat.
It might sound frightening, I also experience a more heavenly chorus sung to me after a long rejected letters of my writing regards faith. I also had just that. I used it for a chorus and later I paid a professional to sing it. I will include a link for you to hear it.

https://sherylcollins1974.bandcamp.com/track/believe-if-you

I continue the song. I  woke writing two verses to complete a whole lyric sheet. The song was later called Believe. That is one reason no matter how big my giant is, I continue as though they are not there.

Sharing My Story:
After continuing rejections from my writing, I decided to go to my first writing conference here in my local city. I sat among many writers who had their books published. All the writers in this group write only books. I sat out among the rest dabbling in songwriting and screen also. I was desperate to get published. After becoming disabled from my illness, the doctors said I would always be able to write. Most of all no one is stealing your writing, so I should feel free at home.  I joined Romance Writer of America as well and took up writer workshops online and also pay a year subscription to Universal Courses taking tons of writing courses that give you CEU’s. Nothing.
I sat by a fourteen-year-old who was published. That night I prayed before I went to bed asking my higher power who is Jesus to tell me to give up. Most of all give me something to do or focus on when I wake up.

In my dream, I got in a white car. The white car drove me but I believed it to be one of my older sisters. Most of all the one that is a minister. The male voice of an angel sung out to me on the ride:

I know that you may have your doubts
You figure there is no way out
If God can raise the red sea?
If the Son of God can make a blind man see?
There is nothing impossible if you Believe.

I woke up with tears in my eyes. I ran to try to jot everything down. I did get at least these words from my dream which I made as a chorus in my religious song " Believe". That was the dream I had in 2014.

Do songs come all the time in a dream? No. We do know that dream journaling can help you learn about yourself and create many other things like novels. Maybe the legends have experienced more than once in a lifetime. Many people have issues on recalling what they dream. So if you are interested in catching some creative songs or some create stories to write songs, dream journaling might be something you might want to add to create.

Here are few things you might want to take to bed with you:

  1. A Pencil or Pen.
  2. Journal of your choice.
  3. Crystals if your into that kind of stuff. Some believe that sleeping with a Lepidolite. It help treats mental health disorders since it contains a natural form of lithium. Also a crown chakra.
  4. Scent. Yes, some people feel better with certain essential oils circulating their room from the diffuser.
  5. Invite your higher power to be with you. I sometimes sleep with a rosary or the bible somewhere near. Maybe you're into dream catchers as Native American. Some culture gives their children special dolls like worry doll to sleep with. Your dream time is not limited and it represents you.
  6. Pray or Meditate.

While I was taking tons of courses for CEU’s that involve some good creative things I decided to try to take interpreting dreams. Well, I found out that was not me. So I decide to find a dream journal and lucky at a book in town, I found “The Dream Experience” by Brenda Mallon that came with a CD. I never got to use the CD since somehow it was broken. I rush to creative chapter.
After my battle within myself about book writing and writing in general, I took inspiration from my dream to continue. Most of all taking my daughter to her high school when she was a teenager was inspiring with a dream I jotted down. “Flower Moon” was written. No, it was never published. A one or two publisher I let seen it past but it not the story. You see Flower Moon has never been rewritten from its rough draft or even edited. While putting a lot of time and money for a rejection I decided to just send it in as raw and rare as it could get. The publishers advise was plenty if ever chosen to pick it up again. I made a cute trailer and now on Wattpad for readers in it’s the first draft.  Maybe the fact about Mary Shelley the author is true after all. She only wrote a book about her nightmare and called it Frankenstein.

As a Songwriter, You have Nothing to Lose. If you’re looking at a blank sheet, after a dream you will not be. At least an idea will be there if not a SURPRISE  song.

Songwriting: How to Use Lyric or Songwriting Journal for New Songwriters

Songwriting: How to Use Lyric or Songwriting Journal for  New Songwriters
By Sheryl Collins

Every time we hear our favorite song we think of how talented the artist is?
Many of us do not know that there more to a song than a great voice, jamming beat, and moving words. Poets known a long time that a song is just a poem. Novelists known a long time that a song is a story told shortly vocally in harmony. Can you journal if you never taken a songwriting course? Can you journal if you play no instrument? Can you write a song if you are not that creative?
I say yes. I have been using my diaries and personal notes in songs since a child. Could it lead to a major hit? I do not know. I do know we usually do not sell or diaries. Our diaries are something private. Some of us just write about everyday life, while some of us focus on a situation. Many people with medical conditions that are mentally are told to journal. Christians has pick this as a way to see their growth in their life with religion. So no one here is from a major record company, a record label, scouting manager in music business. music professor or teacher. You do not have to feel intimidated. If you like to one day put music to your words you can by hiring a company or learning an instrument.

Preparation

  1. Find a notebook, loose paper or a word document on your PC. It’s what you feel is comfortable. No one here is going to judge you. If your into taking writing lyrics to another level than check out lyric journals or music journals on sell like at Amazon. They have pretty good selection.
  2. A pencil or a pen of your choice if your not on a PC. If you grow into being more of a writer or lyricist you’ll find your PC do not alway have access to go everywhere with you. You get a mini tablet. You can write in any color. It does not matter what brand.
  3. A rhyming dictionary is a handy tool if you are going to write in a format or if you're a secret poet inside. Writing in limerick is cool to. Remember this is your journal no one have permission to see it but the eyes you choose.
  4. You + Emotions + Situation = Your Song

There is a format for a lyric sheet. There are parts of a song you will have to learn. Guess what I was a young girl looking at album cover reading song lyrics. So your not a professional  and I was not either than and had lesser education in music at the time. So we will use a easy format I taught myself as a child.

Verse + Chorus/Hook + Verse + Repeat Chorus/Hook + Bridge is optional = Song

Basic Lyric Definitions for Idiots

Verse-writing arranged with a metrical rhythm, typically having a rhyme of words

Chorus a part of a song that is repeated after each verse, by more than one singer

The hook is designed to catch people's attention

Bridge connects the verse and chorus at one or more points in the song

Since you now know the what each is let me tell you how I saw it as a child and still today.
A song is about a situation.

The situation is mainly a  set of circumstances in which you find yourself;  Your affairs

Each verse will tell details about what happened in this situation.
It is like a story how it started to the end.

Chorus/ Hook will tell you in a catchy way what is this situation sum up in a few words.
You might want to say the main idea.

The bridge will tell you a little extra or a driving climax or that burst of emotions that you been wanting to say.
Some of you who understand that Act 1  is going to be our verse one.
Act 2 is going to be our verse two.  Chorus or Hook is the situation as a whole. What is the story about? What is a catchy phrase about this situation you are telling. Optional bridge can be the climax or even sung solution.

Situation: Friday Night Party Enjoying with Friends from a Stressful Week

Tonight

Verse:  Life is short so eat dessert first
             I never take that advice

I am going to party to the sound

Chorus/ Hook: TONIGHT
This is like the last of my life
TONIGHT
Is like a few minutes to lose
Now I’m dancing with you
If the world ends
TONIGHT
I want to be falling with you
Oh.. Oh..Oh.. TONIGHT

Verse:  I love every move on the floor
I will not forget every touch of your hands

Is like a few minutes to lose
Now I’m dancing with you

Songwriting the Personal Affair

Songwriting the Personal Affair
“Make a Sonnet of Your Affair Like Poetry Collection Sonnets of the Portuguese by Elizabeth Barrett Browning”
By Songwriter Sheryl Collins

Writing song lyrics had always been therapeutic for me. I am pretty sure I broke tons of rules when writing lyrics since 1984 as a child. I am happy now in my forties to be able to take classes from experience songwriters to learn to be more professional. It was only when I entered my twelfth-grade high school creative writing where I enjoyed poetry. Most of all those few lines you always find somewhere during Valentine Day. “ How do I love thee, let me count the ways.”
It was then I wanted to know about this romantic poet. I found myself even in my first year of college still drooling over some of those love poems. A woman in Brazil capture in poetry her love for one man that was now shared over the world.

One day watching prime television that an elderly man wrote songs for his wife but as his memory became to fade due to his disease. That is a very emotional story. I have written songs in my private journal for years about many things that include love relationships. You can turn your songwriting journal into a beautiful dedication of someone you love dear. There are many places for a price to put music to your lyrics as they do poetry. How can make a more detail relationship  of experiences in just lyrics or songs?

It all started on how relationships start. I have actually written my wedding songs if I ever fall in love again. I even thought of writing it for a musical. The first place a love relationship starts is the desire to want someone.

  1. Desiring a Companion

All of us who just love to be in love even if it ends badly, many people do fine with the basic things in life and fill fulfil in every way. Some of us would like to a deeper relationship with someone else. This where you start.

2.  Eye candy or Crushes

Of course, you just don’t find the right person when you wake up like magic. In fact, you might find several people who might interest you. The foundation is laid for a closer relationship with someone you just might be interested in than things start to cook. That’s right you can start thinking on some possibility because this individual is given signs.

3.  First Time We Speak

This is the start of something new. We all hope something good as well when we first encounter that first conversation that will start not the desire of wanting love but a chance to grow into a relationship with this person.

4.  The First Date

5. The First Time You are Intimate

6.  Your First Disagreement

7. Your First Fight

8.  Falling in Love or Falling Out of Love

9. Love or  Broken Heart

10.  This Love Forever or  Letting You Go to Start Over

Ladies Love Song Writing Night

Ladies Love Song Writing Night
by Songwriter
Sheryl Collins

This idea came to me after taking a course with the authors of Ladies Night of Drawing Julia Rothman, Leah Goren, and Rachael Cole on Skilllshare. I wanted to become more involved with the method because my daughter is a good manga artist. I thought while taking this course that this could work for songwriters too.
In fact, it can work for many things from knitting, baking, cooking, writing our novel night to yes to songwriting.
Everyone who already follows me knows that I am romance addicted. I am a sucker for love. It is true I am still single, a girl needs to get her love from somewhere. Some women get it from a good romance book or a chick flick but I get it from writing about love. Love sucks right. I made it rewarding to me to focus mostly on love and relationships if it doesn't deal with children.
A girl got to get love from somewhere.
While taking the course I decide to come up with some ideas for a Ladies Love Song Writer Night. We know ladies like to party. Ladies like to party even by themselves. Kool and the Gang had it right about Ladies Night.
If you want to go into production with the song, of course, you need to learn about split sheets and the whole music business law things about it. I am only taking about a great Ladies Night!!! Let the party idea get started. Think of me as your personal party planners ladies of love songwriting.

Note: You might want to start with smaller parties at first.

  1. Getting the Materials Together

This should be easy if you song writes already. That include our musician and singers.
You need either a songwriting journal or a laptop where you keep your songwriting.   I
f you play an instrument you might tag along with a portable instrument. You will also need your choice of what you will write with. It doesn’t matter cause you are the writer. I like to also have a rhyming dictionary. At last a lot of love in your heart!

2.  Party Refreshment

You can get creative with this with themes or even if you are a focus on taking your love song in another language.
You might want to bring the culture food to make it feel a little real.
Myself I love cake. If it’s pop music why not pop cakes including the night.
Yes, as women we like to show off our new recipes and cooking skills.
If you are not lucky to have a cook in the group that’s still fine you can decide the days ahead.
Some people like their snacks simple so if you are into potato chips than go ahead. I am non-drinker.
So it’s hard to get me to take a sip but only maybe a special occasion.
So make sure you guys agree on beverages that night.
Maybe it’s the winter and hot chocolate and mocha a thing with danish.
Maybe it’s a party some have a beer, wine and some sparkling juice for those non-drinkers.
I take medicines so it’s not always a good thing so subbing
Welch's Sparkling Grape Juice in an appearance of a wine bottle is cool.

3. Theme.
As songwriters and writers, in general, the basics is easy because you are human.
Mostly everyone has at least had one love experience whether it’s been infatuation to years of commitments.
Basic Theme’s
  1. Crush- You don’t know the guy yet or he’s/ she ’s doesn’t know!
  2. First encounter- The first embrace of being in the company of someone you desire.
  3. Falling in Love-  Love makes us do crazy things. Talk about the love you share and how you feel.
  4. Devoted- You will give your all because of there no turning back. This guy/ girl is the one.
  5. Falling Out Love-  You, not the right person or maybe I just can’t handle something about you.
  6. Wifey- Forever love starts with long passion and years of the sweet nectar of passion.
  7. Broken Heart-  Maybe it ended the relationship or you feel it will end.  It can be from being different from cheating lovers.

You can decide how you would choose. Maybe you will call the party comers or email to see what the crowd wants by a simple vote. It could be pulled from a jar at the party.

4. Bring the Conversation and Bring Your Styles
Women love to gossip so why not unwind with refreshment while discussing themes. This is a place of good therapy with your girls. Who does not like to talk about our lovers or who one of our girls interested in?

5. Exchange Writing!
This is Ladies Night!  Add a few lines to your girl song or even edit it.  Relax no judges are in the house! Let your hair hang down and have some good old girl time.  Talk out the songs with one another.
You want to keep exchanging until the song is back to the original writer.

6. Sing! Sing! Dance! Play an Instrument! Critique It!
The party is alive with singing with everyone to those who are creating cords for a great song. Maybe another line sounds better. Redo it Redo it! Toast for a great songwriting night and hanging with your girls.

7.  A Finish Song!
It’s your choice what you do with it! Maybe your girls say no split sheet! You do the figures! Completion.
